Man dies after pickup hits riding mower

A man died after the riding lawnmower he was operating was struck by a pickup Friday evening near his home in the Benham community north of Ronda.

Daryl Connely West, 74, was attempting to turn the riding mower around on Greenhorn Road when it was struck by a 2016 Dodge Ram operated by Dillon Scott Anderson, 31, of Traphill about 6 p.m. Friday, said Master Trooper Christopher Casey of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Casey said no charges will be filed.

He said West, of Greenhorn Road, was critically injured and transported by Wilkes Emergency Medical Services to Hugh Chatham Health in Elkin, where he died later Friday. The trooper said Anderson wasn’t injured.

The incident occurred when the pickup was eastbound on the eastern end of Greenhorn Road, a short distance west of the Cottonwood Road intersection. Greenhorn Road was partially closed in the area for about an hour.
