MONONA, Wis. -- Improperly discarded smoking materials caused a small fire inside a patio planter box at a building in Monona Friday afternoon, the city's fire department said.
The fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. at a building in the 3900 block of Monona Drive. When first responders got to the scene, they found a fire in a planter box on a fourth-floor balcony, Monona Fire Chief Jeremy McMullen said in a news release.
Crews were able to knock down the flames with a fire extinguisher before using a water extinguisher to make sure the fire was out.
Damage from the fire is estimated at $1,000.
